The fastest way to destroy the value of a silver figurine is to clean it enthusiastically.
That is the opposite of what everyone's instinct says, so it is worth explaining exactly what tarnish is, why collectors pay more for some of it, and why one bottle under your sink can wipe out decades of it in about four seconds.
Tarnish is not damage. It is a coat.
Tarnish is silver sulfide. Silver reacts with sulfur compounds in the air and grows a microscopically thin film on its surface. The metal underneath is completely untouched.
Note that it is sulfur, not oxygen. This trips people up constantly. Silver does not rust. Silver oxide, when it forms at all, shows up as a dull grey haze rather than the warm brown-black we recognise as tarnish.
Why the darkness makes your figurine look better

Here is the thing nobody tells you before they hand you a polishing cloth.
On a detailed piece, tarnish settles into the recesses — between feathers, inside fur, under a wing, in the corner of an eye — and stays thin on the raised surfaces that get handled. The result is contrast, and contrast is the only reason your eye can read sculpted detail at all.
Strip it completely and a superbly detailed figurine goes flat and soapy, like a photograph with the shadows deleted. The detail is still physically there. You just cannot see it any more.
That darkening in the recesses is what dealers mean by patina. On antique and designer work it is desirable, and aggressive removal is considered a fault.
The good part: when tarnish turns into colour

Now for the genuinely beautiful thing that silver does, and the reason "tarnish bad, shiny good" is a wildly incomplete story.
When that sulfide film is extremely thin — we are talking a fraction of the wavelength of visible light — it stops looking like a stain and starts behaving like a soap bubble. Light reflects off both the top of the film and the metal beneath it, the two reflections interfere, and certain wavelengths cancel while others reinforce. The film has no pigment in it whatsoever. The colour is pure physics.
This is called thin-film interference, and it is the same effect you see in an oil slick on wet tarmac.
Because the colour depends on film thickness, and the film thickens over time, toning follows a predictable progression:
- Golden and straw yellow — the earliest stage. Warm, even, and often considered highly desirable on its own.
- Amber, peach and magenta — the film thickens and the interference patterns start doing interesting things.
- Blue, violet and green — the spectacular range, the one collectors chase.
- Grey and black — past the thin-film range entirely, where the compound's own colour takes over and the show is finished.

In the coin world this is not a curiosity, it is a market. A Morgan dollar with rainbow iridescence sweeping across its face can command a premium of 500% or more over an identical coin with dull toning. Same metal, same date, same grade. The difference is a film a few hundred nanometres thick.
Some of the most celebrated toning in numismatics was an accident of storage — coin albums from the 1930s to 1960s used papers and boards whose sulfur content quietly painted the coins inside them for decades. The famous ones were, in the most literal sense, ruined by their packaging into something worth far more.
Two practical consequences. First: if a piece is developing colour, leave it alone. You cannot buy that and you cannot rush it. Second: the progression is a fraud detector. Artificially toned pieces are usually cooked with heat or chemicals, and they tend to skip steps or land on combinations the physics does not actually produce. Colours out of order are a warning.
The methods that destroy value
- Dip solutions. The fast liquid tarnish removers are an acid. They do not lift the sulfide off the silver — they dissolve both, taking a layer of your figurine with them and leaving a duller surface behind than the one you started with. Every trace of patina and every bit of colour goes at once. This is the single most common cause of value loss on collectible silver, and it takes seconds.
- Abrasive polishes and cloths. Every polish removes a microscopic layer of metal. On flatware, survivable. On a figurine it rounds off fine detail permanently, and on a plated piece it will eventually cut straight through the plating.
- The foil and baking soda trick. Chemically cleverer — it reverses the reaction rather than abrading — but it strips patina uniformly and often leaves a flat matte finish. Never use it on anything with stones, wood, shell or enamel.
- Ultrasonic cleaners. Loosen glued mounts and can damage soft or fractured stones.
What is actually reasonable
Dust with a soft brush. Wipe handling marks with a clean dry microfibre cloth. If a piece is genuinely grimy rather than tarnished: warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, a soft brush, immediate thorough rinse, and complete drying — water trapped in a hollow base will do far more harm than tarnish ever could.
If you want a piece brighter than that, find out what it is worth first. On a plain modern pour, polish away. On something with a maker's mark, forty years of patina and a blue-magenta sheen coming up across its back, put the cloth down.
Storage, which matters more than cleaning

Preventing tarnish is easier than removing it, and the culprits are almost certainly already touching your collection.
- Keep silver away from rubber bands, wool, felt and untreated wood or cardboard. All of them release sulfur. Half the world stores silver wrapped in felt, inside a cardboard box, which is roughly a slow-motion tarnishing machine.
- Anti-tarnish strips in an enclosed container absorb the sulfur compounds before they reach the metal. Replace them about annually.
- Airtight bags or containers slow air exchange dramatically.
- Avoid humidity, and avoid bathrooms.
- Handle with clean dry hands. Skin oils and salts start the reaction, which is why fingerprints tarnish first and darkest.
The rule
Tarnish is reversible. Removed detail is not. Colour that took forty years to arrive cannot be put back on a Tuesday afternoon.
When in doubt, do less. A buyer who wants a piece bright can always make it bright. A buyer who wanted the original surface cannot un-dip it.
